Are You Tired Of Hearing The Word Change?

Written By: Theresa Furzland

Well...

I’m going to start with a short background of my career and a hint about the future subject matter you are likely to see from me.

I have worked in the mortgage industry for 25 years now and you could really say I’m a “lifer” as my father’s family was also in the industry as realtors, lenders and appraisers. My own experience has ranged from one end of the spectrum to the other it seems. I have held many positions from post closing, closing, processing and originating, managing, training and the owner of two businesses. In addition, these positions have ranged from small loan brokerage companies, small and large banks, national mortgage companies, credit unions and title companies.

This variety has given me a unique perspective on the industry and I am hoping to pass some of this on to you.
One of the main lessons that I have learned is that change is a constant in this industry and it’s nothing to be afraid of as long as you keep up to date on guidelines and information. I know that changes have been fast and furious the last few years and the flood can be overwhelming, but knowing the resources that are available to you and keeping updated makes all the difference. That’s why I’m so excited about the programs and classes that the Mortgage University and Loan Processor University offer.

You may or may not have noticed that when I listed my job positions above I seemed to go backward in the loan process. There is actually a reason for that. It’s because I learned this business backwards. My first job was cleaning up a “pile” of post closing problems. From there I moved into managing post closing, then being a closer, closing manager, etc. I do currently originate loans and also close loans. Anyway, the reason I mention this is I believe that learning what is needed to deliver a complete loan file to the investor and secondary market has given me a view of the process that most loan officers and processors don’t get to see.

This probably gives you a hint, as I said I’d give you, of the types of contributions you will see from me to the café. I like to discuss the importance of education and complete loan files. Each person’s part of the process either makes it easier or harder for the next that needs to pick the file up, and knowing as much as you can about your role in the process as well as all the other players roles is invaluable.

OK, enough about me....next time around I’ll talk about something more interesting.
